The Volunteer Application Process

Thank you for your interest in becoming a volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters of York.  

To learn more about our many programs and services, please review our Mentoring Programs.

Below you will find a list of areas that are now accepting volunteers along with an outline of the Application Process.  Please review before completing the inquiry form

The Application Process

  • Ensure you are comfortable with the Big Brothers Big Sisters Mentor Requirements and Responsibilities
  • See if mentoring is right for you by evaluating yourself using our Self-Assessment Checklist 
  • Complete the Inquiry Form or contact Volunteer Coordinator Allison Haskins at 905-726-2149 ext. 310 or bigbrothersbigsisters.ca
  • Attend and complete a Volunteer Information Session
  • Attend and complete a Volunteer Pre-Match Training Session
  • Provide a completed Volunteer Application which can be downloaded here or obtained at an Information Session
  • Submit an original Police Vulnerable Sector Certificate (PVSC)
  • Submit three or four References (depending on circumstances)
  • Complete Accessibility Training. (Click here for the YORK REGION ACCESSIBILITY TRAINING VIDEO)
  • Applicants for the Big Brother and Big Sister programs must submit a clear copy of the front and back of their driver’s license and vehicle insurance (all other volunteer applicants must submit a photo ID - driver's license not required)
  • Participate in a one-to-one interview (and home assessment) with a Program Coordinator
  • Volunteers applicants will receive notification via mail or email once their file has been discussed by the Program Team and a decision regarding acceptance has been made
  • Additional program specific training is required for Go Girls!, Game On!, and Recreation Mentoring
