Girls Can! Recreation Mentoring

                GC - Small

Did you know that by age 14, girls are dropping out of sports at two times the rate of boys?

Girls Can! Recreation Mentoring is a brand new variation of the Recreation Mentoring program to focus on encouraging and inspiring girls, aged 8 - 12, in sports. Run by female identified group facilitators, the program focuses on developing fundamental movement skills and increasing physical activity in girls. This allows young female participants to be mentored by adult females in sports. Each program is eight weeks in length with one session per week. Sessions range from one to two hours in length depending on the time of the program (lunch hour or after school).

Similar to Recreation Mentoring, the program strives to:

  • To support girls in the community to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle.
  • To teach girls fundamental movement skills to promote confidence, self esteem, team work, and to increase physical and mental fitness.
  • Provide the opportunity for girls to learn a variety of new activities, sports, and games that they can participate in while learning about barriers, resources, and community access.
  • Strengthen the community sport and recreation sector by providing training to the volunteer mentors in areas such as coaching, leadership, youth development, and risk management.
  • Above all have fun and make a difference!
